Whiplash Injury
What
is a Whiplash Injury
Whiplash is the common name for neck sprains,
and those caused to the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spines. The
term "whiplash" refers to the action
of the neck or back being thrown
forward and/or backward at speed. This may cause the
tissues of the neck muscles to tear
- resulting in pain and often
limiting movement of the damaged
areas.
Whiplash is a
common injury associated with motor vehicle
accidents. The most common cause is
being rammed from behind by another
vehicle. Recent studies have shown
that whiplash injuries could happen
even in low impact collisions. A
more crucial factor is how the
driver or passenger was positioned
at the moment of impact. For
instance, if a driver had his head
turned sideways at the time, a
relatively low impact from behind by
another vehicle could result in
quite serious whiplash injuries.
Similarly, a
heavier vehicle,
such as a van could cause serious
whiplash injuries at quite low
speeds.
